Since the year 2006, home to me hasn’t just been Rye Brook, NY. I have formed another home in Hinsdale, Massachusetts at my sleep away camp, Camp Taconic. I am the second youngest of four siblings, and sleep away camp wasn’t really a ‘thing’ in my family. My brother had tried it out at Camp Wayne for a summer and decided it wasn’t his thing. My older sister, Anna, decided to go to camp the same summer that I started, but decided on a different camp than Camp Taconic. Most of my school friends had attended camp for one or two summers before I decided to go. I felt that it was something I wanted to do. I felt too old for day camp and I was too young for teen tours. I wanted to get a new summer experience.
I can safely say that going to camp was one of if not the best decision I ever made. I have tried activities that I would never get the opportunity to if it wasn’t for camp. I have formed friendships with girls that I know will be there for me for anything. I have learned how to live away from my parents and without a computer or phone for 7 weeks. Camp has had such an influence to my life.
I started camp in the 11s age group but I was only 10 years old. I continued going to camp up until my LIT (leader in training) summer, the summer when I was going into 11th grade. I don’t think there is anywhere else in the world I would rather spend my summers.
